This project will use training in Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) to promote personal development and improve employment opportunities
for those living in the LEADER+ wards of North Norfolk. These rural areas
are less well served by existing provision due to remoteness from main centres;
this project will address local needs by an innovative use of technology to
provide training in local venues.
Technology is based around 16 laptop computers equipped with wireless broadband
access, printers, and items to aid access for people with disabilities. This
equipment will be used to provide a number of taster sessions followed by
a series of courses covering ICT training from beginners up to level 2. Other
provision will be offered as the demand is identified – anticipated subjects
include computerised accounts and payroll as well as digital photography.
The project will be catering for smaller class sizes than is usual in Further
Education Outreach, offering greater levels of individual tuition.
Essential ICT
Knowledge of ICT is increasingly seen as a requirement to fully participate
in 21st century society, however provision of further education to meet this
need in rural areas has often been piecemeal. Whilst the area does have some
provision, this is focussed on a small number of sites, which can be difficult
to access by some people living in remote rural areas and with poor access
to public transport.
This project is therefore designed around the provision of local delivery,
which reduces the need for travel and is easier to fit around other responsibilities
like child care.
Equal Opportunities built in
As with all LEADER+ projects, the applicant has been required to consider
how to ensure its services are accessible to all. The project will target
those who often miss out on further education, such as the unemployed and
women returning to the workplace. Many of the sessions will be held during
school hours to make it easier for those with child care responsibilities
to attend. The project will also provide financial support for childcare where
necessary, allowing a sum of money to be paid to either a registered child
minder or a relative for the duration of training sessions.
Partnership delivery
Whilst North Norfolk District Council is coordinating the project, delivery
will rely upon a partnership with the main ICT service providers, including
Norfolk Adult Education Services, Paston College and the North East Norfolk
Learning Community.
Outputs
The project will provide 20 taster sessions and the follow-up training sessions
will benefit 150 un/underemployed people.
Grant awarded
Broads & Rivers LEADER+ has offered a grant of £81,637, representing
the full costs for both capital and revenue costs of running this project
over the period of November 2004 to July 2006.
