Emphasis on sustainable tourism for second half

With the Broads & Rivers LEADER+ project now (Winter 2005) halfway through its programme, the Local Action Group (LAG) responsible for delivery has decided to put a greater emphasis on sustainable tourism.

The LAG recently carried out a review of progress to date and considered priorities for the remaining years. The programme will close at the end of 2008, with the last grant applications being approved by December 2006.

The review agreed that whilst continuing to encourage all project ideas that support the aims of LEADER+, more strategic projects were needed to develop sustainable tourism within the area. (By sustainable tourism we mean delivering economic benefit whilst respecting the local environment and community). The programme will be particularly keen to support initiatives that offer long lasting benefits and priority will be given to innovative projects that actively involve local people and which spread benefits throughout the community or a number of tourism providers.

Possibilities under consideration include provision of training and better promotion of the industry, also development of new attractions, but further ideas are welcomed.
